Cartel de los Soles: The Venezuelan network labelled a terrorist organisation by the US
The United States has officially designated the so-called Cartel de los Soles as a terrorist organisation, claiming that it is headed by Venezuela’s president and other senior government officials. The group is alleged to be involved in large-scale drug trafficking, corruption, and organized crime, using the country’s institutions to facilitate illicit operations.
The term Cartel de los Soles—which translates as “Cartel of the Suns”—originates from the sun insignias worn on the uniforms of high-ranking Venezuelan military officers, who are accused of participating in the network. US officials have stated that the cartel has played a central role in trafficking tons of cocaine internationally and enriching political elites.
However, some analysts and observers question the existence of the cartel as a formal organisation, suggesting it may be more of a label used to describe widespread corruption and criminal activity within Venezuela’s government and military. Despite this, the US designation has serious legal and diplomatic consequences, allowing for sanctions, asset freezes, and restrictions on associated individuals.
The move reflects ongoing tensions between the US and Venezuela and underscores the challenges in addressing allegations of state-linked criminal activity.
