UN vows accountability as probe into mass killings in Sudan continues
The United Nations has pledged to ensure that those responsible for recent mass killings in Sudan are held accountable. The announcement comes amid mounting evidence of atrocities committed by paramilitary forces and ongoing efforts to cover up crimes, particularly in conflict-affected regions such as El-Fasher. UN human rights chief Volker Türk criticized the international response to the crisis, saying: "There has been too much pretence and performance, and too little action." He emphasized that the new probe aims to move beyond statements and ensure concrete measures are taken against perpetrators.

The investigation will focus on alleged extrajudicial killings, mass burials, and destruction of evidence by armed groups. Researchers and human rights organizations have already used satellite imagery and on-the-ground reports to document killings and attempts to conceal bodies, raising concerns about systematic crimes against civilians.
The UN stressed that it is committed to working with Sudanese authorities, international partners, and local communities to gather evidence, support victims, and bring those responsible to justice. Officials hope the probe will deter further violations and reinforce the international community’s commitment to human rights and accountability in Sudan.
