Ghana's Asante king welcomes return of artefacts from the UK and South Africa
The Asantehene, King of the Asante people in Ghana, has welcomed the return of cultural artefacts from the United Kingdom and South Africa.
The items include objects looted by British colonial soldiers during past conflicts, as well as artefacts held by the AngloGold Ashanti mining company. The return of these treasures is seen as an important step in restoring Ghana’s cultural heritage and acknowledging historical wrongs.
King Otumfuo Osei Tutu praised the efforts, emphasizing the significance of reclaiming symbols of Asante history and identity. Experts say such repatriations strengthen international cooperation and highlight the ongoing global debate about returning stolen cultural property.
